After seeing what has happened at the UAE tour - I will definitely try and collect my number earlier / day one rather than latter. If I had it my way it would be sent to me. I appreciate RSA is still free of Covid-19 and lets hope it stays that way.

I hear Chapmans is closed today because of "the wind."

frikkin' force 8-9.... it's mental... imagine a tour bus full of tourists plummeting over the edge!

I received an interesting email yesterday from CTCT indicating that we can ride a second lap for an additional entry fee of R550. I'm all for charity and contributing, but this is plain GREED... Oh, I wasn't intending to ride the additional lap anyway, but surely there needs to be a bit of fairness in the approach.

I have no issue in paying an additional fee for a second lap if I were to ride it, but the second lap is far cheaper for them as they do not:

1. provide double hospitality
2. print additional numbers and other registration material
3. cater for additional admin at registration
4. provide additional infrastructure is needed
5. hire additional staff to cater for the second lap (since this is only open for relatively fast riders, so will finish within the normal cut-offs, which is a condition anyway)
6. incur many other costs which are only incurred related to the individual and not the second lap

Surely they should apply some fair play here and charge a discounted rate for the second lap and I am sure that they would get more takers. In this environment where event entries are on a serious decline (still available for CTCT recently, where in the past these sold out on day 1) and the premium price charged already of R550 per entry, this is plainly greedy.

Maybe it's just me overthinking this...

I see it as charity donation and a chance to actually enjoy the views and people.  First lap i see f-all and stop nowhere and no clue what going on (except that i'm sufferting)....

If you really want to overthink it ... Why don't top groups get discounted entries as they never stop at water points?

R550 is a very steep yes, but i still prefer this over previous arrangement where second laps were banned and people had to sneak in somewhere along the route and do it skelm.

I suppose the organisers see this as doing people who want to do a second lap a favour

I understand your fear.. I wonder how SA amd CT International Airport in particular are monitoring people entering Cape Town? Not sure how many but as far as I remember we get quite a few international cyclists for this event.

2nd lap is a privilege, and one that you have to pay for, they don't have to offer it, and they can charge whatever the hell they want to, and seeing as the price has never differed from normal entry price I am assuming that enough people happily pay to do it, that they don't feel a need to change the situation.

Don't overthink it and feel you are somehow entitled to a discount, regardless of perceived lack of extra expenditure, it won't get you very far.

Rather take the email as a pat on the back that they think you will make it in the first place and enjoy, hoping to one day get that email, at which point I will very happily pay twice.

Hmmm ... I start in 1K at 6:37 -- assuming the last group is 15 minutes late so starting at 9:45 ...

How long to get from finish back to the start --- non closed roads so maybe 8 minutes?

I would need to do 3 hours flat ... 15 mins faster than my perfect weather 2018 effort.

Highly unlikely.

Pity

Last time i did twice the start groups was running late , so when i got back the 3rd last bunch just started leaving and think my time was 3:10, so its doable.

Last year due to the weather I never made it back in time.

So I took my time, went to the car, filled my bottles, got some snacks, cycled down Lower Main Rd, through Rondebosch, onto the main road, through Wynberg, past Victoria Hospital and onto the M3 from there. It was still closed to cars but no more riders on the road so I turned off at the end of the M3 and went right because the main road was open to cars again, I went back along Spaanschemat, Up The Nek, Down into Hout Bay and joined the route from the circle. I enjoyed my 2nd "half lap" assisting a few of the elderly woman up Suikers and few gentleman through Camps Bay etc. This year I will prob not make it back either as I start in 1k.. I plan to do the same thing except I'll cycle down the main road into Fish Hoek and perhaps turn right off the route over Black Hill and then join up from that intersection again and do the same, assist the people really struggling up Chappies and Suikers, especially 1st timers. It gets lonely out there for the back markers sometimes who are battling to make cut offs..

Yip.

Been discussed here many times and although you not in the minority in your thinking, you not going to win. I guess they do it because they can.

Tx. Just put it out for discussion, not about winning or losing. It's merely an opinion.

I think it just seems a bit steep because the 94.7 allows you to do an official second lap for free provided you are riding for a charity
