Not going to work. In the last batch 7C I did not see a single road bike, only MTB and some folks on those bamboo wooden look bikes.

You liar  :whistling:  Rode from 7C on my second lap and there were at least 3 road bikes there.

Also noticed an e-bike struggling up Smits.... I wonder how the dude slipped that one past the marshalls...

The only way to make this a "fun ride" is by not timing it...   :D

One of the few, if not only true mass participation funrides I have ever done (only once need to go back) is Moonlight mass. No timing and a true funride!

talk about dangerous I saw a guy on his Roadbike fall infront of me whilst we were standing at the robots in town on the way to the start. He never even clipped out of his pedals and his excuse was sorry i had too much to drink last night .

Now a guy riding in that sate of mind in an event like that is really not acceptable its asking for trouble and putting all riders around him at risk  :cursing:  :cursing:  :cursing:  :cursing:  :cursing:  :cursing:

Looking at the sub 3's for the 50's and over there's still plenty of life in "old ballies" including one rider in the 70-74 group

Oldest female finisher was in the 80-84 group.

Some efforts are made in the CTCT magazine everyone is given at registration with riding tips and do's and dont's, but I dont think everybody reads the useful info.

947 has introduced the "lap around Kyalami" which slowed the super fast decent down Kyalami hill. Definitely a safety upgrade to that portion of the race.

Smaller bunches is always difficult, especially with 26000-30000 participants. 2 minute bunch gaps doesn't really work, and the later bunches are huge when it would be better making them smaller. The organizers want to be off the road as soon as possible, so limiting entries would be the obvious option it seems.

my seeding is not so lekker so started way further back than normal (3E).

Really missed being able to ride in an actual bunch, everything was just extremely splintered.

Interestingly there was also an upcountry club riding together with about 10 riders who were getting quite aggro because their little peleton kept on getting messed up. I'm not sure eactly what they expected to happen.

There is very little 'proper' group riding going on that far back.

The good news for me is that a lot of the basic etiquette and techniques are so simple. A bit more education and self policing would go a long way. Would be nice if someone could do a humourous argus version of this that goes viral. Ollie?

but then i do remember that for last 20 years I've always heard people shouting "hold your lines" and there is still so much swerving so maybe it *** riding and Argus go together like jam and toast

I was in 2B and there seemed to be a real mix of abilities and experience. Some excellent and courteous bunch riding (letting people in, signalling intent, warning about slower riders) and some poor.

Also - I wonder if the good conditions gave everyone a feeling that they were proper racers - There were a few times where I found myself pulling out of the group I was in and riding alongside, particularly on some of the descents, because I just didn't feel safe.

I was also in 2B and I can 100% agree with this. Some good communication, signaling and holding of lines but also a lot of nonsense. I nearly got taken out twice by people swerving across the road... Ended up going down most of Chappies by myself because the bunch I was with at the top was hazardous.

Brilliant Race.. although I bonked badly or something .. just saw some stars after Chappies and went recovery mode on lap1.

My only gripes was  on lap 2:

1: No food at stalls.   Last time around there tons to eat, so did not pack any extras, was crap to ride with coke/poweraid for 5 hrs.

2:  How did the guys get e-bikes into the start shoots ????

3:  Don't cycle with earphones in, you MIGHT think you can hear others, you cannot.

Rip to riders and marshal

One of the few, if not only true mass participation funrides I have ever done (only once need to go back) is Moonlight mass. No timing and a true funride!

You should bring an old bike to Eroica SA, no timing, long stops, chats, breakfast burgers, brandy tasting, a swim, coffee, lunch along the way, nobody cares how long you take. And if you really need a challenge, do the 140km on lonely dirt roads in the Montague heat.

But yes, I did 2 Moonlight Mass rides recently. The December one was on the same night they switched on the Christmas lights. The January one was on the night of the Cape Minstrels parade. Both were world class fun!

...just heard the guy who went into the marshal is a good friend of mine, i'm hoping its not, he apparently has a broken jaw, but that would be just small of what he has to endure for the rest of his life knowing someone has lost their life! :(

i've tried to contact to him, to no avail, sent my well wishes and hoping to meet him soon :( :(
