Normally CTCT is gun to mat timing. The announcers on at least one occasion said there was a neutral zone and timings would go from the first mat. I was a bit doubtful on this so I started mine on the gun as usual and stopped as I crossed the line. My GPS (Wahoo) came out exactly to the second the same as the official time. So it seems the announcer / neutral zone was rubbish and it was gun to mat as usual this year. Only a few seconds or a minute I guess, but anyone who missed a sub-Something by a small margin might be a bit annoyed.

My official time is 3:00:14. Yep I missed it by just 15 secs. I'm extremely chuffed with my time don't get me wrong (previous best is a 3:14 and a few secs) BUT this is what pissed me off. At the end, there was a Gantry then a timing mat. I was in a massive group (a mix of 1 d, e, f and g racers) and we were all gunning forwhat could have been a sub 3. So after that Gantry and mat we and slack off thinking its the end of the race. I stop my Garmin at 2:59 and a few secs. We then spot another mat and start going for it again. And then another and the finish sign with the final mat. Having stopped my Garmin for a few secs I pressed start again but I new that my time would be off. I was however hoping that somehow I could just come under but it wasn't meant to be. I also started my Garmin when the gun went off and heard the announcer saying that timing starts from the first mat but evidently it didn't. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the race and it certainly tested my resolve and what I'm capable of. See you next year CTCT! (God willing)

My first one in 10 years, so you can thank me for the perfect weather. We undertook a social approach, as we have been doing for the last few 94.7's. it was great chatting to the many riders who had 21 jerseys on, one chap was doing his 28th and said it was the best weather ever, he thanked me...

The best part, apart from the banter and company of good mates, was the free draft beer, grappa and espresso at Dario's in Hout Bay, as it made Suikerbossie the easiest I have ever experienced. I made a point of continually appreciating the views and thanking the Spectators for their support. These mass rides taken with a different approach, remind me of why I like riding my (shiny, black, carbon) bike on a closed off road, with the wind in my hair...

Well done to the city of Cape Town for fixing the Olympic pool sized sinkhole in Camps Bay, between when I cycled around it on Friday morning and Sunday. I did not think they would make it. Damn I just realised that I will be 60 if I wait another 10 years to ride it again... The weather was so good from Wednesday, that I almost forgot that it was one of the reasons I moved back to Jhb in the 90's.

I kept telling The Old Man to watch out for the sudden narrowing of the road so we don't get pushed into the barriers or the hole.........and then I looked like a bit of an idiot when the massive hole had vanished!  :D

I was about 3 mins off a PB, so I knew the few second between gun and initial mats wouldn't have made the difference. Honestly I wasn't that bothered anyway. I hadn't really trained for speed of late anyhow, and my HR on the day was all over the place - way higher than I could sustain. Plus it was a stunner of a day. But I was a tad surprised to see no adjustment in the official time though after the announcement and remember thinking some guys could be pissed to have missed out by that small gap.

Was a really nice day out, Cape Town was showing off with this one.

I punctured before the first mat so I could go back to the start chute and start again with a couple of buddies in 3d to do a fun ride and soak in the atmosphere instead of pushing for time. I also feel the front bunches are a bit safer as it is a lot more predictable.

To the guy that rode a sub 3 from 3d I hope you got home and poured yourself a tall glass of bells.

Really sad to hear about the loss of life... Rip

i shouted for most of the bunch from $ to around the 2C-2D batches, we were on Wynberg Hill and Suikerbossie!

Thanks Meezo - saw you guys on both the hills.  David (in the buggy) Gavin and i managed to sneak in at 3hrs27.  was pretty broken but stoked.  awesome day out there.

Really sad about the deaths and my heart goes out to the families dealing with the loss.

Big day for the beleaguered City of Cape Town with its socio-political and environmental challenges. :w00t:

Some with awesome milestones.

Some got hurt.

Some still out there soaking up the gorgeous Peninsula.

A man died in a crash incident, according to the radio reports. :(

That was the 1A bunch. You can see me and MK in our red, white and blue Hout Bay Cycling Club kit against the fence.

Not an unreasonable question at all. Let's just say that we have tried to figure out a scheme to do it 3 times... [emoji6]

If you start at 3 am?

My son and I arrived back home yesterday evening after flying back from Cape Town. This, without a doubt, was my best cycle tour ever!  Not best in terms of time, but because of how much I enjoyed it! I am by no means in the league of most of the cyclists here on the Hub, being a middle aged (55), slightly overweight cyclist. My best time ever was 03:57 WAY back in 2007 and this year my time was 04:26. This was my third best time ever. After finishing without having to stop even once for water, and thought how good I felt after each of the climbs I realised that i could have pushed myself a bit harder and maybe even achieved a personal best. But, I went out with the intention to go out and enjoy a day out in the saddle enjoying the views, scenery, camaraderie and the awesome support from all the spectators. Without them this race would just not be the same.

My thoughts goes out to the families of those that have succumbed doing what they loved.

Hopefully I will be back in another year or two, but I am limiting myself after I have done 10 in succession to only once every couple of years. At about R10K for a couple of days in the Cape it isn't a cheap thrill!

Ok so here's my question wrt timing, Maybe I'm just missing something I dunno...

How do they time you from Gun to Mat And not from the time you actually cross the 1st Mat?

If I was for example seeded in 1A but started in 1E, Racetec results will show my time for group 1E, which they would only pick up once I crossed the 1st Mat!! So are they not supposed to take my time from the 1st Mat till the finish mat instead of noticing that I rolled over the mat 1min after the gun for 1E and before the gun for 1F?? Or do they take my time from the Gun for the start of group 1E??

You can tell we've thought this through:

We probably need to start at around 2 for a nice gentle lap of the Peninsula. Then we'd get back just in time for the race snake start, where we'd have to hang on for dear life (you should see my wheel sucking skills when my life depends on it) and hopefully we get to finish at around 9:30 - just in time for the last lap, which would include several beer stops (we've been practising that last lap for several years now and really know how to pace ourselves, both on the bike and in the pubs!).

My understanding is that the first mat is not used for timing - it is just to check that you started

Everyone in the group is assumed to start at the same time ie when the gun goes off

ie officially the okes in the front of the group don't start earlier because they roll over the start mat first, everyone in the group has the same starting time.

How does that work if say you are supposed to have started in H group, but for whatever reason only start in K, is your start time the gun time for the H group?
