Amazing...the API fiasko of last year prompted me to consider what I actually get from Strava. Needless to say Im back on the free version, does all I need.

This is a next level of p***ing off your stakeholders.

If I was CEO of garmin i would apologise to users and kick strava to the curb. Then i would allow wahoo bryton karoo and all other head unit and watch manufacturers to upload to garmin connect and open the platform to those users.  I think strava overestimates its power here.

I agree. Unless Strava start making their own head units/watches, they need Garmin more than Garmin needs them. Lord knows what wacky backy the Strava legal department have been puffing.

Its not so simple.....

Strava supports a broader community than just its users. There is a multitude of other platforms that feed off it to provide ride data services, e.g. Intervals.icu. Garmin doesn't support those types of businesses as far as I can tell.  I suspect there's more to the patent infringement claim than Strava are disclosing. Garmin appears to have implemented it first, but did they develop it off the back of Strava IP that wasn't launched yet but was covered under NDA? This is one to follow closely as the facts and truth emerges

There might be others that Garmin do not support, but intervals.icu is specifically supported after the Strava api issue a while back.

After a price increase I did not see the value of paying for strava. Will keep using free version unless it becomes gutted to move features only to paid.

You can direct sync garmin to Intervals.icu and pretty much every other platform.  i.e Final Surge, Xert, myfitnesspal and pretty much every other platform you can think of where you need to transfer your data.  Strava already shot themselves in the foot with their change in API to 3rd parties earlier this year and all platforms pretty much put in direct sync without the need for Strava sync

It's quite amusing to watch people get onto their high horses with "I only use my activity data for the noble purpose of my own training, people who care about what others are doing are vain".

Strava literally exists for you to be able to compare yourself to others, that is 95% of its selling proposition.

I pay the R599/year because I want to see how my segment times compare to others every time I ride. Most importantly, I freely admit this. There is no point in pretending that I'm better than everyone else and I don't care about others. We ALL care about how we compare to others, if you don't, you're lying to yourself.

I have a paid Strava subscription and I upload using Garmin. If Strava decides to kick Garmin to the kerb then I suppose I'm not continuing down that road. The main reason I use Strava is because of the mileage and hours on my bikes, which I use as a measuring stick to check service and parts replacement intervals. I'm not into the training component any more as much as I used to be.

Ditto

Although, I am getting slower and I'm seeing more and more rides with fewer and fewer PR's despite to my mind at least going ball's to the wall every ride. Either I've peaked in terms of my performance or I really am getting slower.

It's sad to see yourself fall off the curve so quick, but at my golden age of very late 40's I suppose it's to be expected.
