*🕊️Fatal Accident🕊️*

A cyclist has been knocked down by a car on Victoria Road landmark Glen Beach. Sadly the cyclist is deceased. Victoria road between Strathmore and Argyle Road will be closed for the next few hours while forensics and SAPS accident reconstruction teams attend the scene. Please use alternative routes and expect delays.

Oh no!! Tragic! My condolences to family and friends.

The entire Atlantic seaboard section from Bakoven to the Lighthouse is simply too congested for runners, walkers, cyclists, parked cars and moving cars, buses, scooters and motorcycles. I have driven, walked and cycled this section a couple of hundred times now and there simply isn’t enough space. Accidents will sadly continue to happen until there is a separation of traffic. Personally I think the entire section of road should be repainted and split in three, with white lines and bollards separating them. Two lanes for cars and one lane for non motorists. Redesign and expand public parking spaces to make up for lost parking.

There is plenty of space if drivers obey the rules of the road and, more importantly, have respect for the lives of other road users.

RIP Idries 🙏

MintSauce, this is the truth and nothing but the truth. This is a tragic and unnecessary loss of life. Naturally, on other forums, before the facts are known, the usual mud is flung in the direction of cyclists "not riding single file" or "being on a busy road" or "taking up too much space". But the truth of the matter is that there is no need for this to happen. Yes, accidents do happen, and we can't avoid all risk on the road. But the devil-may-care that South African motorists have on the road is truly shocking. There is no appreciation that a car, even going at 40km/h, is a lethal weapon when it comes to other road users. Of course, we just have to look at how pedestrians run into traffic too, to truly understand that our road sense is no sense at all. If people exercised caution when driving, patience, and showed respect for others, these stories would not be a feature of our cycling lives.
