I'd rather be in an uncrowded, safe and unspoilt part of nature on a 50km tar road loop than duelling it out with murderous bergies, paraat "rangers", and hundreds of germans wearing socks with their Birkenstocks where you needed photoshop to make your picture look enticing.....????

There is no relationship between the service they (are supposed to) provide and the money you pay for said service.

 

This pattern is repeated for all government anything.

 

Your money is a donation to be used for massive salaries, lavish parties and fancy cars. The job they are supposed to do is merely an annoyance (reflected in their rude behavior) that they begrudgingly do to pass the time.

 

Surely as a citizen of this country you understand this by now

Firstly , going back to page 1 and the video of what happened . Under NO circumstances can the rangers actions be justified , regardless of whether Nic had a permit or not , or even if choice language was exchanged .

Secondly , I may have missed it , but has Nic ever put out a statement with his version of events ?

 

We know initially the rangers had a BS story about him breaking his own arm  , but they did   comment . Has Nic ??

If he hasn't , do we take his silence as "Don't speak to me , speak to my lawyer " .

If he has ( sorry I missed it ) what was his version ??

 

Regardless , I hope he heals up quick and can still achieve his goals for the year .

The tented camps that Parks now closed "due to safety concerns" have been an ill conceived venture to start with. Without proper planning, without involving the real experts (Mountain Club Of SA comes to mind) they decided to make a hiking route from Cape Town to Cape Point, with a few tented camps where hikers can sleep over. Fantastic idea, but their market research was off, their marketing was off and at least 2 of the camps were built in totally the wrong place. So, very few hikers came, willing to pay. Then they tried to rent the camps out to non-hikers. Few takers once again. Why? 

 

Let's take the Silvermine camp as an example. It is literally 5 metres from the tar road that Nick rode and where his arm was broken. The same tar road hundreds, maybe a thousand, cars use on a busy day. Would you like to rent a wilderness camp like that? Oh, but at night it is closed to others you say? You can still hear the traffic on Ou Kaapse weg, all night long! 

 

Safety concerns my ass! It failed because it was a stupid plan from the start.

 

The only "camp" that works is the stone cottages above Kirstenbosch / Newlands and those were built many many years before SANParks took over. Why do they work? Why do people want to rent them and go stay there? Because they are in the right place! People who knew the mountain picked the spot, not a desk jockey with a map in Pretoria!

We had a super rude ranger at the gate last Sunday as well. Same Silvermine gate with the same attitude. my post from social media where I have still not got an answer from Sanparks...

We cycled up Ou Kaapse Weg on a training ride, wanting to link Tokai trails and we told if we dont have cash we cant enter, fair enough. FYI, its definitely not safe carrying R300 (for 3 cyclist entries). Lady at the gate was super rude. Told use if we dont have cash we should cycle down and draw cash, cycle back up and they will let us in. If this is how we treat locals, how do we treat tourist?

I agree. Just going for a ride add trying to get a day permit in some places can be a real P.I.T.A. The system is outdated and silly. It's 2020 - get rid of cash and paper!

 

Riding without a card or permit is not recommended...

Paying per ride gets expensive, so it really makes sense to get one.

You need it for front face of Table Mountain (Including Rhodes Mem area), Newlands/Kirstenbosh loop and Tokai itself (of course).

 

R625 if you get a single card.

Go with 3 other mates and it comes down to R360 per card.

@ R90.00 per entry, it pays itself off quite quickly.

Not aware of a statement from Nic, but I suspect that as soon as he felt snapping, this whole thing became sub judice... whether anyone realised or not...

Pretty much sums up SANP in general. However, I think that the other camps such as Orange Kloof and Cape point probably were worthwhile. The tour guide on Cape Talk had booked the Cape point one for a group only to be told via a press release that it was suddenly closed.

 

SANP were invited to participate on the radio but as usual didn't take up the offer. They don't communicate and are impossible to work with to discuss solutions as everyone who has ever tried has found out. 

 

The only thing that gets any action is really bad negative publicity ( mild negative publicity doesn't work) or the threat of bad negative publicity or the threat of or actual legal action. 

 

In the meantime they continue to pillage the tourist resource that is TMNP while spending as little as possible to maintain it. 

 

On that subject I hiked up Platteklip with family and a visiting foreign guest on Saturday. Along the way I noticed SANP's version of erosion protection is a few slack barbed wire strands ready to snag unsuspecting hikers on this very busy and sometimes dangerous route. I'm sure the list goes on.

I see you hail from the distant north so maybe you don't know Ou Kaapse Weg and Silvermine. Its on top of a mountain - a steep one.  Have you heard of Zapper and Snapscan and even a card machine, which the OP mentions. Evidently SANP haven't either.
