Also easier said than done without any options of assistance, not everyone can find an alternative or scale back enough and still make a plan to survive.

Advendurance, Pursuit Challenge etc have managed to hold smaller scale events with a number of adaptions and restrictions.

innovation is what we need here. Events don't have to die. Events as we have become accustomed to certainly will be challenged to survive.

Strava isn't an answer.

Time Trials? Maybe...

Mass start? Well why change the timing tec and have the course open for a few hours everyday during lifecycle week for participants to ride the course? In Cape Town It might just be a clever way to get a proper cycling culture going if we had a 2 hr window for the M3 to be closed and rider can use the road. minimum inconvenience. The logistics can be worked out.

Entry fees still apply.

Of course there are problems to be solved so lets solve them and turn adversity into an advantage

This way if we wake up and the wind is blowing we don't ride that day. Pick the best day. We just don't tell the masses of our theory, otherwise we will all ride on the same day.

indeed there is that. Like I said problems to solve but it beats nothing at all. :)

Haha, I know, there is no such thing as a chilled ride.

Definitely, accommodation is booked and paid for, if the race doesn't go ahead we have super easy access from our accommodation to the cycle path that goes to Melkbos so will just ride that a few times, not the same scenery but still worth it. Argus is a small fraction of our time spent in Cape Town and I am damn sure the local tourism industry can do with every R1 that they get.

This is the kind of attitude I like and agreed 100% - for us binnelanders a large part of participating in the Argus is riding pretty routes that we don't get to ride often. If an informal Argus solidarity ride is to be arranged for that weekend (should the 2021 event be cancelled) I would absolutely do the necessary to still make a super weekend out of it.

Agree, innovation is what is needed. From here in the USA, I have airline reservations made and had hoped Covid would be dead by March, when I made my plans early in 2020. Now it looks like this Beast is very alive and getting worse. A possibility, which really should be considered - postpone CTCT until October. This will go back to before some of you guys were born, but I rode the first Argus Tour in 1978 and guess what - It took place in October! If the Tour is postponed until October, many more people will have received vaccinations, hopefully we will be winning the fight against Covid and the Tour could take place in the format we have become accustomed too.

That's a good idea.

As well intentioned as it is, I'm not wild about interprovincial tourism and air travel until this things is under control.

If by some miracle it does happen in March, I will drive down. I spend way too much time as it is close to planes :D .

But I somehow really doubt I will be even driving down in March, even having a half field is still too many people. Postponing is a good idea.

Saw a mail from the CSA president where she basically said don't expect any type of event until at least March and don't expect to do a mass participation event until September.

I agree with you, not really worth the risk doing this, especially in the current format where it is just a social ride around the peninsula. Happy to come back when it is a proper CTCT again.

At this point the next event I'll be doing is a small mtb event in the platteland early April.

"Dear Friends of the Cape Town Cycle Tour

As always, the safety of all participants and the well-being of the broader community of Cape Town remains our most important priority in the planning and staging of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. With this in mind, the team at the Cape Town Cycle Tour has been closely monitoring the ongoing developments around the ‘second wave’ of the Covid-19 pandemic.

For several months we have been working hand in hand with the authorities and stakeholders around the possibility of hosting a significantly revised version of the Cape Town Cycle Tour in March 2021. Sadly, current circumstances make the hosting of a mass participation event in any format untenable for the immediate future.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust has thus taken the decision to postpone the hosting of the 2021 edition of the event to a later date in the year.

We will continue to explore all available options and opportunities that remain open to us in terms of hosting a safe and memorable Cape Town Cycle Tour.

We look forward to bringing you some exciting news in the next few weeks.

Keep cycling, remember to observe all COVID-19 Protocols and be safe.

With warm regards

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Team"
